Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt konnten Schottlands Mischer und Spirituosenh\u00e4ndler ihr Getreide nur von DCL kaufen. In dem Versuch, das Monopol zu brechen, schlossen sich Andrew Usher, William Sanderson, John Crabbie und James Watson zusammen, um eine neue \u2013 und bedeutende \u2013 Getreidebrennerei in Gorgie zu bauen, in der N\u00e4he des Union Canal, der Eisenbahnlinie und der Caledonian Distillery, die im Jahr zuvor von DCL \u00fcbernommen worden war.<br \/>\nDie Produktion begann 1887 mit einem einzigen Coffey. Innerhalb von drei Jahren hatte sich die Kapazit\u00e4t auf drei Millionen Gallonen pro Jahr verdoppelt. W\u00e4hrend des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde die Whiskyherstellung eingestellt, die Produktion jedoch 1920 wieder aufgenommen. In der schwierigen Zeit der 1930er Jahre wurde sie behutsam gepflegt, bl\u00fchte aber nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wieder auf. In den 1960er Jahren produzierte sie sechs Millionen Gallonen pro Jahr (eine Zahl, die sich zu Beginn des folgenden Jahrzehnts verdoppeln sollte), und eine Zeit lang war North British die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Getreidefabrik in Schottland.<br \/>\nIn den 1960er Jahren wurde sie immer noch als eine Art Genossenschaft gef\u00fchrt, zu deren Anteilseignern Robertson &amp; Baxter, IDV, William Lawson, Macdonald Martin, Seagram und William Teacher geh\u00f6rten. 1993 wurde die Leitung von Lothian Distillers \u00fcbernommen, einer gleichberechtigten Partnerschaft zwischen R&amp;B [heute Edrington Group] und IDV. Das Ergebnis der Fusion zwischen Letzterer und DCL (damals noch UD) im Jahr 1997 bedeutete, dass North British von der Firma, gegen die sie sich gegr\u00fcndet hatte, gemeinsam gef\u00fchrt wurde.<br \/>\nWelch Ironie&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fun fact: <\/strong>Die Lothian Distillers und damit auch die Standorte und die Produktion befinden sich im gemeinsamen Besitz von Diageo plc und der in Privatbesitz befindlichen Edrington Group. Gesteigerte Verk\u00e4ufe von schottischem Whisky nach Indien, China und S\u00fcdamerika f\u00fchrten 2007 zu einer Produktion von sage uns schreibe 65 Millionen Litern. Haupts\u00e4chlich produziert f\u00fcr 1) Diageo-Tochter United Distillers &amp; Vintners (u.a. Smirnoff Wodka, Johnnie Walker Whisky usw.) und 2) der Edrington Group (u.a. Famous Grouse Whisky usw.). Um dies zu erm\u00f6glichen, importiert das Unternehmen Mais (ca. 3.000 Tonnen pro Woche aus Frankreich \u00fcber den Hafen Leith) sowie eine geringere Menge an gem\u00e4lzter Gerste. Die anfallenden Abfallschalen werden zu Viehfutter pelletiert, w\u00e4hrend das verfl\u00fcssigte Kohlendioxid \u00fcber den Auftragnehmer &#8220;Air Products and Chemicals&#8221; verkauft wird. Nachhaltiges Business&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whisky\/Whiskey: 18yo Old Particular (Douglas Laing)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Der 18yo Old Particular (Douglas Laing) Single Grain Scotch Whisky wird am besten als Klasse f\u00fcr sich betrachtet. So hebt er sich von klassischem Single Malt Whisky aufgrund des Rohstoffes ab. W\u00e4hrend so manch ein schottischer Whisky aus Gerstenmalz destilliert wird, basiert dieses Qualit\u00e4tsprodukt auf ungem\u00e4lztem Getreide. Normalerweise flie\u00dfen solche Destillate in Blends ein. Dieser Single Grain Scotch Whisky ist jedoch auch kein herk\u00f6mmlicher Blended Scotch Whisky, sondern verzichtet komplett auf Malt Whisky zugunsten von hochwertigem Grain Whisky. Dieser stammt von der Firma North British Distillery mit Sitz in den Lowlands. Als eine von nur sechs Brennereien des Landes, die eigens f\u00fcr die Produktion von Grain Whiskys etabliert wurden, blickt sie auf mehr als 125 Jahre Erfolg zur\u00fcck. 1885 gegr\u00fcndet, bereichert das Unternehmen so manch einen Verschnitt. Diesen edlen Tropfen verdanken wir nicht der eigenen Abf\u00fcllung, sondern einem bekannten unabh\u00e4ngigen Abf\u00fcller. Er ist Teil der Old Particular Serie von Douglas Laing mit raren Einzelfassabf\u00fcllungen &#8211; hier ein von nur 788 Flaschen!!!.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sidenote zum Abf\u00fcller:<\/strong> Bis 2013 arbeiteten die Br\u00fcder Fred-Douglas und Stewart Laing zusammen und leiteten das familieneigene Abf\u00fcllunternehmen bevor sie beschlossen, das Verm\u00f6gen des Unternehmens aufzuteilen und getrennte Wege zu gehen. Douglas Laings Tochter Cara schloss sich ihrem Vater an und brachte ihre umfangreiche Erfahrung mit schottischem Whisky mit, nachdem sie als Global Brand Manager f\u00fcr Jura Single Malt t\u00e4tig war (mit einem kurzem Intermezzo als Marketingmanagerin f\u00fcr Bowmore und Glen Garioch).<br \/>\nCara ist in der dritten Generation der Familie Laing t\u00e4tig, welches 1948 von ihrem Gro\u00dfvater Fred Douglas Laing gegr\u00fcndet wurde. Er mischte seinen eigenen Whisky etablierte ein Abf\u00fcllprogramm mit vielen schottischen Destillerien.
